When we want the attention of

a colleague, a client, a vendor

or our management team,

we need to invite their attention.

Whether we are in a meeting,

passing them in a hallway,

or sending an email,

how we say it or write it

will determine if they will listen.

Here is an example:

Original: Can we talk for 10 minutes?

Revised: I have an idea of how to increase our revenue, so let’s meet.

The first version sounds like a time burden.

The revised one offers exciting potential.

Another example:

Original: We need to talk.

Revised: I want to tell you about a hack to expedite the project.

The original sounds like doom and gloom.

The new version sounds time-worthy.

When you want someone’s attention,

grab them with a headline.
